CREATE healing + acupuncture is an acupuncture clinic in Portland, Oregon, owned by Tara Grant, LAc.
About Tara, M.A., MAcOM, LAc.
I believe life is a journey in which we are meant to explore the beauty as well as the depths.
My journey with natural healing began as a child. My father taught me how to eat healthy and take care of myself, growing up in the woods of Upstate New York. My stepmother taught me about foraging for herbs and plants in our forest backyard that we would take back to the kitchen to make creations. I was a woodland fairy child; I was one with the woods and this is where my heart still resides.
In my twenties I went to school in Los Angeles, a far journey from my home, but like the hero(ine)'s journey, this is what must happen for the inner journey to occur. I faced my demons in the big city, and somehow in the chaos walked away with a BS in Cognitive Science from UCLA, a degree that prepares one for studies in artificial intelligence. I am naturally fascinated by how the brain works, but these studies took me far into my head and I realized I had to ground back down into the earth.
Next was a degree in Clinical, Spiritual and Depth Psychology from Antioch University, which challenged everything I thought I knew about myself via the plunge into the depths of Jungian studies. I also studied mindfulness and Buddhist meditation and began a rigid Ashtanga yoga practice which challenged me physically as well as mentally daily. The combination of all of these led me to discover something fundamental about myself. No matter how far I reached and traveled away from my home, I had to come back to the trees eventually. This led me deep into the studies of Taoism, and landed me in a school based on these principles.
I ended up at school for Chinese Medicine at YoSan University in Los Angeles, studying the Taoist foundations of the medicine as well as QiGong. Once I finally had enough in the L.A. chaos, I bittersweetly left and returned to the trees, transferring to Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland. I graduated in 2017 with a MAcOM and became licensed in January 2018.
My other training experience includes a 2 year training for somatic psychology and trauma healing at the Radical Aliveness Institute. I lead somatic processing groups in Portland, Oregon.
I also am currently in training for Core Shamanism practices at LightSong School in Portland, Oregon. I have studied Shiatsu, Tuina and Quantum Shiatsu and other modalities of energy work. I use Qigong, TRE, yoga and movement in my practice. Movement is very important to me, personally and in my practice.
I am a registered with NADA as an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist (ADS).
I live in Portland, Oregon with my son, Kyler, who is a musician. He inspires me every day with his creativity and connectedness.
I am a licensed acupuncturist in the state of Oregon, focusing on mental/emotional wellness, otherwise known as Shen medicine in Chinese Medicine. This is my speciality, but it does not mean this is the only thing I treat. I believe the Shen aspect of our being seeps into everything else, and so I also treat a wide range of conditions.
You can see a list here.
I have a Masters Degree in Spiritual and Depth Psychology, as well as a Bachelors of Science in Cognitive Science, otherwise known as artificial intelligence, and a background in Behavioral Neuroscience. I have experience in a research lab and a published research article on behavioral flexibility. The modalities I use are a marriage of science and intuition. I am always listening to the wisdom of the body, but also understand what the role of the brain, emotions, and higher functioning as well. I blend this with intuition and dreaming (what is beyond that of the visible world). This is a combination not many others understand, and since I've been equally in both worlds, I believe bridging the two worlds is the only way to build a better medicine and create health and wellness beyond what either can do by itself.
I use the tools of Chinese Medicine, the traditional approach as well as the Taoist approach, which is closely related to Shamanism, which I bring into the room as well. I use acupuncture, moxa, bodywork tools, Shiatsu and Tuina massage, Chinese herbal medicine, nutrition and lifestyle counseling. I also use divination tools as well as story, dreams and imagination to help you get in touch with your ultimate wellness and goals in life.

WHAT DOES "CREATE" MEAN TO ME?
Art inspires me. All my life I've used my imagination to create a life and I want to help others do the same. I am a natural storyteller, an okay chalk artist and a crappy musician, but I gave birth to a sensational one. I feel things deeply and in order for me to deal with life I need to create. When I've gone through periods of my life when I'm not creating something, I am miserable. I think that's true for a lot of people, which is why I have followed my dreams and imagination and created something new. Something different and something that feels like a birth. A creation. This is my creation.
Create to me means that every client has the opportunity to use their own intuition, experiences and imagination to create the healing session they need. It also represents the vital creative force, the energy that we need to do everything in life. If we are missing this, we are lost. Bring your creative energy and let's create something together.
What should you expect?
I use a plethora of creative tools like stones, oils, archetypes and cards, dreaming, imagination, art, music, movement, guides and processes, combined with the *magic* but really, proven results of acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbs, massage and energy work.
